Wakamatsu Fishout -- This Wednesday, May 4

The first of this season's Wakamatsu fishing evenings will be this Wednesday, May 4, gate opening at 6 PM (weather permitting).

The Wakamatsu Pond, as it looks on Monday, May 2. Fish from the bank or a flotation device.

The pond is on the historic Wakamatsu Farm property on Cold Springs Road, about a mile north of Gold Hill Road, and a couple of miles south of Coloma. The pond is normally closed to all fishing, except one day a month for members of the American River Conservancy (ARC) and the El Dorado Chapter of Trout Unlimited (EDTU), and their guests. After a few of years of drought, the pond has rebounded spectacularly, and there looks to be good populations of bass and sunfish (and frogs). We're asking anglers to use flotation devices or fish from the bank — no wading —  to protect the breeding areas for these fish. On our observation trip today, we saw lots of evidence of fish. It looks like surface flies and lures might be worth a try, as well as subsurface insects (e.g., damselfly) and fry imitations. Use lightweight fly or spinning gear — both bass and sunfish are great sport.

This is a very special private water fishery with little competition While that doesn't guarantee success, you'll find the anglers share their ideas on what's working. If you can believe them.

Members of the ARC and EDTU pay $10 for the privilege, and guests are welcome for $15. The gate opens at 6 and closes at dark.

The forecast as of Monday includes the chance of rain with lightning Wednesday afternoon. We will monitor the situation. If there still looks to be a threat of lightening by late morning Wednesday, we will send another e-mail to cancel.
